Sedalia Center, VA

The group stayed at the Sedalia Center for 4 days / 3 nights of Dry Camping (not hookups). The caravan rented the entire center, so we had it all to ourselves.

From here we visited the D-Day Memorial. Wow. Afterwards, we stopped with Celeste and Roger at the “Blue Lady Cafe“. The cafe is in an old bank, and you can reserve a table for 2 in the vault. Wow. Great food and chocolates. They also have a florist.

The group made a “Dutch Oven” lasagna dinner with Dutch Oven Cobbler for dessert.

Travel Day 5 – Mabry Mill

Drove from Galax, VA (Milepost 217) to Sedalia Center (Milepost 70)

Our longest drive of the Caravan (140 miles). A beautiful day of driving. We stopped at the Mabry Mill. A really cool stop that we could have spent much more time at. The Mill’s water wheel is still spinning, and the mill still has many of the wood working tools in it.

Mount Airy

We spent a few hours in Mount Airy, the hometown of Andy Griffith. We took the Patrol Car Tour around town. Our driver was a huge Andy Griffith fan and even bought a house that was owned by Andy’s grandparents. We saw the local Quarry and drove around the city. We saw the house Andy grew up in (which you can stay at). The cars are all Ford Galaxies. The fleet consists of a 1961, ’62, ’63, ’64, ’65, and ’67 models.

Wineries

On Friday, we visited a couple wineries along with Dick, Becky & Victoria.

First, we visited Shelton Vineyards in Dobson, NC. Very nice tasting experience. This is a large operation, and they were hosting a concert in the evening. We were able to taste 5 2oz classes of wine for $20. The presentation was fantastic, and the outside seating was very nice. Highly recommend.

Second, we visited Stony Knoll Vinyards also in Dobson. This is a family run farm. We visited with the owner who told us the history of how this farm has been in the family for over 100 years and has transitioned over the decades from tobacco to other cash crops to grapes. Highly engaging. Pam had a glass of Rose she did not love (it happens). Dick and Becky shared a flight of 6 red wines that they enjoyed. Victoria has a flight of 3 “Reserve” wines she loved. Another great setting.

Bluegrass Concert

Dick and Becky arranged for a group to perform at Cool Breeze Campground. The concert was very nice. They played a bunch of local music, original songs and told jokes along the way. It was a nice way to cap off a travel day.
