Trees of Mystery

On Saturday, we had a break in the rain in the afternoon. Pam and I went to the “Trees of Mystery”. From the road, this looks like your typical tourist trap; large Paul Bunyan and Babe statues out front and lots of parking. Don’t let that scare you away. This was actually a very cool place and well work the $20/person.

They have the “Redwood Canopy Trail”, which are netted canopy bridges connected together 1/2 way up the large redwoods. There are platforms around each tree.

They also have the “SkyTrail“. which is a 1/3-mile journey through the forest tree tops via a Swiss gondola. A total of 8 Gondola Cars continuously make the approximately 8-10 minute, 1570-foot trip up the mountain – giving riders not only spectacular views of magnificent redwoods. At the top, there is an observation deck where we could see the ocean.

There are lots of redwood sculptures throughout the trails and a huge gift shop.

Boy Scout Tree Trail

On Thursday, Pam and I hiked the Boy Scout Tree Trail to Fern Falls. Another cool hike. The Boy Scout Tree is 23 feet in Diameter and is 238 feet tall.

The trail has an abundance of huge trees and is a showcase of the world’s best redwood scenery. The trail feels wonderfully remote and is one of the most pristine old-growth trails; there are only a handful of trails where you can walk through old-growth redwoods for this long without hearing traffic noise or seeing any sign of development.

One of the best parts of the Boy Scout Tree experience is the drive to the trailhead. For two miles you’ll bump and wind through truly top-notch old growth along the unpaved Howland Hill Road.

The naming of Boy Scout Tree remains controversial. The National Park Service claims the tree was so named because a Boy Scout troop leader discovered it. Other sources suggest the tree was named for Boy Scouts who blazed the trail to the tree or for its resemblance to a two-fingered Boy Scout salute (although Boy Scouts typically use a three-fingered salute).

Crescent City, California

On Monday, we drove 45 miles south to Ramblin Redwood RV Park in Crescent City, California. Here, we met up with Kirk and Terry from the Cascadia Caravan for a few days. A campground situated among the redwood trees. Large full hookup sites in a great location.

On Tuesday, we hiked the Stout Grove Memorial Trial, an ancient coast redwood forest (old Growth) with 300 foot trees; scenes from “Return of the Jedi” were filmed here. A short 1-mile hike but a must see.

Later we hiked Grove of Titans Trail. This trail has some of the worlds largest measured redwoods (by volume). It is a cool trail with metal walkways to protect the forest floor from compression to allow rainfall to reach the soil.

Trail of Titans

Tuesday night, we celebrated Pam’s birthday at Marlo’s Restaurant. A simple place in a strip mall, but the food was outstanding. We really enjoyed the evening.

Wednesday, we visited Tour Thru Tree, an 800 year old Redwood with a road passing through it. Unfortunately, our beast of a truck would not fit through all the way – the mirrors were just too wide! Good fun for $5.

Gold Cost, Oregon

On Saturday, Pam and I drove 195 miles to Ireland’s Ocean View RV Park in Gold Coast, Oregon. Right off of US-101 on the Oregon Coast. This small RV park is right on the ocean – 500 feet from our trailer. We stayed 2 nights and had full hookups.

Gold Coast is definetly a tourest town that can handle a lot of people in the summer. For us, it was quite and relaxing. We had dinner at Sunsets Family Pizza; huge place and the pizza was good.

We mainly just relaxed and waited for it to stop raining.

1 Year Anniversary of Being Homeless

Today, Friday, October 28th, 2022, marks 1 year since selling our home in New Richmond and hitting the road full time in our Airstream Trailer. Wow. It has been a great experience. Sometimes, we miss not having a bricks and mortar home somewhere, but there is time for that later.

We stayed at the Freed Estate Vinyards in Winston, Oregon. A nice Harvest Host with lots of room and nice wine tasting. We tasted 13 wines for $15. Pam bought a bottle of Rose which we enjoyed that evening sitting outside. They are done harvesting grapes for the season, so we were able to pick a few bunches of grapes to eat. Delicious!

On Saturday, we head back to the west coast of Oregon.
