1 Year Anniversary of Being Homeless

Today, Friday, October 28th, 2022, marks 1 year since selling our home in New Richmond and hitting the road full time in our Airstream Trailer. Wow. It has been a great experience. Sometimes, we miss not having a bricks and mortar home somewhere, but there is time for that later.

We stayed at the Freed Estate Vinyards in Winston, Oregon. A nice Harvest Host with lots of room and nice wine tasting. We tasted 13 wines for $15. Pam bought a bottle of Rose which we enjoyed that evening sitting outside. They are done harvesting grapes for the season, so we were able to pick a few bunches of grapes to eat. Delicious!

On Saturday, we head back to the west coast of Oregon.

Trail of 10 Falls

On Saturday, we traveled 64 miles to Silver Spur RV Park in Silverton, Oregon. We stayed only 1 night and really did not do anything. We stayed in site 49.

On Sunday, we traveled 21 miles to Silver Falls State Park in Sublimity, OR. What a great state park. Stayed in the B loop in site #28. Nice, long site with water and 30 amp electric. Lots of trails to walk and good facilities. We stayed here to hike the Trail of 10 Falls. Unfortunately, it rained all 4 days of our reservation. Kelly did some camper maintenance and improvements, but mostly we relaxed and recovered from the long caravan.

We decided to extend 1 more day, because the weather looked good on Thursday. It was a nice blue-sky day. We hiked the Trail of 10 Falls, and it did not disappoint. It was a long, 11-mile hike at the rim and down in the river canyon. We were exhausted at the end, but we both loved it. I created 2 videos. A short (3 minute), fun video and a longer (9 minutes) detailed video. My first time trying out a video blog of a hike. Hope you like it.

Mount Hood, Oregon

On Wednesday, we travelled 106 miles to our final caravan campground, Mt. Hood Village Resort in Welches, Oregon. A nice, wooded campground with good amenities again. Nice lodge and Cafe.

Thursday, we had our Caravan Banquet at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood; very nice and a must see if you are in the area. It is owned by the National Forest Service but run by a private management company. Build during the great depression by the WPA, it is magnificent.

Friday was a down day to relax and run errands. We had a nice final dinner at the Skyway Bar & Grill. A nice, local BBQ place.

After 70 days and 21 camping locations, our caravan came to a close on Saturday. Pam and I accomplished our goal to travel the Pacific Northwest and see what it has to offer. We enjoyed our time and will stay in Oregon for a week or 2 before heading to California and beyond as we make our way back to Wisconsin for Christmas and New Year’s.

Redmond & Bend, OR

On Sunday, we drove 130 miles to the Expo Center RV Park in Redmond, Oregon. Nice concrete level sites with great amenities. The location is good for seeing Bend and Redmond.

On Monday, we went to the High Desert Museum and took a guided nature walk with the group. We learned about the high desert and how it differs from traditional deserts.

For dinner, Pam and I went to the Wild Rose Northern Thai Restaurant. The food was good, but no Singha beer! Afterwards, we had a nice walk in Farwell Bend Park. Nice walk around the river an a paved path and a couple of walking bridges over the river. Bend’s Riverwalk.

Tuesday, we went to Wild Ride Brewery for local beer and lunch. They have multiple food trucks serving a variety of food. We had a 12″ pizza that was very good and tried the gourmet corndog. On Tuesdays, they will fill any growler for $9 so we filled our 64oz monster.

Proxy Falls – Sisters, Oregon

On Friday, we did an all-day trip to the town of Sisters Oregon to see the Three Sisters Mountains. On the way, we stopped and hiked Proxy Falls. What a great hike with an even better reward. It was a 1.6-mile loop hike over lava rocks. One of our favorite hikes on the caravan. Don’t skip it if you are in the area.

On our way to Sisters, Oregon, we stopped at the Dee Wright Observatory. WOW. Really cool black lava rock observatory was built during the depression and is at an elevation of 5,187 feet. They built viewing ports in the wall to look at the distant mountains. Very difficult to show. I took 2 photos of each (viewing port and mountain) and did an overlay to try and show it. Middle Sister, North Sister, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Washington. The lava flows from 15,000 years ago are amazing to see.

In Sisters, Oregon and had lunch at The Open Door. Cool Place. Great seating outside with a big fire and a neat greenhouse you can dine in. Food was outstanding. Pam absolutely loved the place. We will definitely return here in the summer.
