Carolyn and Jeff rode their Harley to the campsite in Lowden State Park for a visit. We went to lunch Dos Amigos. Very nice and a huge margarita!

Heading West to Illinois

After the caravan ended, Pam and I started to head back west to Illinois where we will spend about a week before heading to Milwaukee for an Airstream rally.

On our first day of travel, we drove through West Virginia and made it to Gallia County Jr. Fair Campground (293 Miles). This is a typical fair ground camping in a large grass field (with hookups) for $30. A big storm rolled in, so we were grateful there were no trees.

On our second day of travel, drove to Prophetstown State Park in West Lafayette, Indiana (322 miles). This is a very new campground, and the sites were great for with full hookups in site 164. A bit expensive for a state park $30 + $9.60 in taxes + $10 for a 1-time entrance fee = $50.60 for 1 night.

On our third day, we stopped by Airstream of Chicago to look at a trailer they have. While there, we met the GM of travel trailer for Airstream – Bryan Melton. How cool is that.

We stayed at Sycamore RV Resort in Sycamore, IL for a few nights. This was a good find. It is run by Dale and Anita. It has 2 manmade lakes from an old gravel pit. The sites are nice and the walks around the lakes are great.

Finally, we made it to Lowden Memorial State Park in Oregon, IL. We are here for 4 nights and will meet up with Carolyn and Jeff (Pam’s Sister and Brother in-law). This park is cut into the woods and our site (64) is huge. Oregon is a cute down, where Pam bought soap at Oregon Soap Shoppe and we had lunch at Ogle County Brewery and stopped by the Oregon Dam Park.

Wineries (again)

Hazy Mountain Vinyards and Brewery

We visited this winery with Celeste and Roger. Nice wines, but the view was fantastic. The owners have spent $70 million dollars to level the top of a mountain and build the Vinyard.

Trump Winery

This is probably the nicest winery we have ever visited. The approach up the long driveway to the winery on the hill was great. The views were outstanding. And the wines were also good and not expensive ($32 for 4 2oz pours & a souvenir glass). Click here for video of Eric Trump explain the winery.

Jefferson Vinyards

Another nice winery. President Thomas Jefferson was an early share holder along with George Washington; read about the history here. It is very close to Monticello.

Monticello

The grouped toured Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello.

The guided tour of the home was well done. Kelly then went to meet Thomas Jefferson. We were only able to spend a couple of hours here. Plan for at least 1/2 of a day.

Our final drive of the Caravan to the end of the Blueridge Parkway.

Another nice day to drive.
