On Thursday, we drove up to Chandler, AZ and had dinner at the Perch Brewery.
The Perch Brewery is not only a Brewery and Pub but home to a collection of over 50 brightly colored, tropical rescue birds. The food was very good, and the beer selection was amazing.

On Wednesday, Pam and Terry went to Picacho Peak State Park. With all the rain have had, the desert flowers were blooming early.

This week started out with Mark & Connie Miller visiting us, our good friends from the Cascadia Caravan. They stopped by Casa Grande on their way to the Cajun Country Caravan. We met at Dukes Bar at Francisco Grande Resort. John Wayne loved Francisco Grande as he kept a penthouse suite at the top of the hotel where he often stayed since he co-owned the largest cattle ranch in North America to the west of the property. Afterwards, Mark & Connie followed us to Palm Creek to see Billy and get a tour of the resort.
On Tuesday, we headed north to Pheonix to watch a Brewers vs Cubs game at American Family Fields. What a great little ballpark to watch a ball game. We had great seats behind first base. Kelly almost caught a foul ball and then got close to 2 balls throw to the crowd by first baseman Rowdy Tellez. The Brewer’s won 6 to 3 on 3 home runs.
Wednesday night and Thursday morning, it rained quite a bit. The front nine on the golf course was shut down due to flooded holes. Thursday evening, we walked over and took some cool night photos with the palm tree lights reflecting off the standing water on hole #7. Also, the night sky after the sun set was beautiful with the trees and the water.
The rest of the week, we continue to play golf and pickleball. Pam took a group pickleball lesson on Saturday. We continue to get our steps for the Camino de Santiago walking challenge. Kelly is 42% complete and has walked 202 miles. Pam is 38% done with 185 miles. We have received a couple more post cards.

Pam took another wood working class this week. There were 4 students making a beautiful rolling pin from 4 different woods (Black Walnut, Cherry, Maple and Padauk). It was a 4 day x 3 hour class. Ron (from Canada) was the instructor – just great and very patient. Pam really enjoyed woodturning. She is going to buy her own 4 jaw chuck so she can keep making stuff in the woodshop and not have to borrow a chuck.
The rolling pin is made from plans from: Woodturning Design Magazine, Spring 2004 (Issue No. 1) – The Premier Issue. You could hardly read the instructions (a copy of a copy of a fax), so I found an old copy of the magazine for sale on Amazon and bought it. Click on the magazine cover to see the instructions.

This past week was a bit cold and windy. All our Pickle Ball sessions were cancelled due to the wind. Golf for Kelly was also cancelled on Wednesday. We did get out and golf 9 holes on Saturday @ Palm Creek.
The Comino de Santiago Challenge is going great. Pam and I both passed the 20% mark (100 miles). Every time we reach this milestone, they plant a tree in our honor to help the environment.
We also receive postcards along the way as we passed through town virtually. Click on the postcard to see all of the postcards we have received so far.
As of today, we are at both at 120 miles and ahead of our pace to finish in 12 weeks. It looks like all 7 of us on the challenge are on pace. It has been fun to do this as a group.
Pam took the “Beginners Wood Working” class.
The class cost $75, and she made a very nice serving tray out of Walnut and Cherry wood. She learned how to use the Jointer, Band Saw, Drill Press and various sanding tools. The first day (3 hours), she cut all the wood and glued the tray together. The second day (2 hours), she sanded everything smooth and then finished the wood with bee’s wax (food safe). It looks great. We mounted it above our stove.
Wood Workers Auction
On Saturday, they held the annual Wood Worker’s Auction. The auction raises money to buy and upgrade equipment in the shop. It is amazing what these people are able to make. Unfortunately, we just looked and did not take any pictures – Sorry.
Pam bid on and won a fantastic Pizza Cutter for $100. It was made by Steve Alexsander from Walnut, Babinga & Sapele Woods. This thing is so amazing and beautiful. It fits perfectly behind our cooktop, below the serving tray. To celebrate, and test it, Pam made meatball pizza on the grill. Tasty!
