Laura Plantation

On Friday, we visited the Laura Planation outside of New Orleans. A sugar cane plantation on the banks of the Mississippi river. We took the 1-1/2 hour guided tour of the manor house, slave quarters, sugar fields and gardens.

We discovered four generations of Creole history at the Laura Plantation of this well-preserved estate. Located just an hour from New Orleans on the Great River Road, Laura Plantation was founded in 1804 and provides a vivid window into Louisiana’s Creole past.

Kayaking around Martin Dies Jr.

On Tuesday, we rented kayaks at Martin Dies Jr. State Park and went kayaking. We did 5 miles of paddling in the lake and around the island that contained our campsite. Wow, what a great place to kayak. The pictures don’t do it justice.

Texas and New Orleans

We finished out last week at Camp Caravan RV Park. A well run park outside of Waco. Great location and we will return to the area.

On Monday, we traveled to Martin Dies Jr. State Park outside of Jasper, Texas. We met up with our good friend, Al Jordan, who was staying close by. What a great state park with lots of cypress and magnolia trees. Highly recommend this park. We kayaked 5 miles along the Paddling Trails. and hiked. Kelly even played pickleball with Al.

Pam and I hiked the Slough Trail which features 16 Bridges. We actually counted 17.

On Thursday, we left Texas, and headed to New Orleans where we stayed at the French Quarter RV Resort. This is a well run park right outside of the French Quarter. In fact, it is a quick 5 – 10 minute walk. Although very expensive ($120/night), the location was worth it.

Waco Mammoth National Monument

While in Waco, we visited the Mammoth National Monument. On a spring day in 1978, Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin embarked on a search for arrowheads and fossils near the Bosque River. To their surprise, the men stumbled upon a large bone eroding out of a ravine. This ended up being a huge discovery of Columbian Mammoths.

The first Magnolia Sign made by Chip

Magnolia Market in Waco

On Saturday, we took a shot drive to Waco Texas.

Our primary purpose was to visit the Magnolia Market in Waco. Pam loved the shopping and the entire atmosphere. It’s a great tourist opportunity, but also a great gathering place for the locals. Everything is done right and picture perfect. Food Trucks, Sweat Tea and Cup Cakes.

Pam wrote a personal note to Jo and Chip in the guest book.

We had lunch at The Backyard. Very good barbeque and nice atmosphere. Huge stage in the backyard; the music must be great on the weekend.
