Boondocking – Cieneguita

Today, we arrived at our first boondocking / dry camping location (no hookups – electricity, water or sewer). It is in the hilly grasslands an hour southeast of Tucson. We have not attemted more than 1 night before. Our goal is to stay 4 nights.

We have the solar suitcase I built. It can supply as much as 190watts in the bright sunshine.

We are in the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area which has free camping and is a working ranch where the cattle roam free!

Davis Mountain RV Park

We arrived at this very nice RV Park in Fort Davis, TX. Simple park with full hookups for $25/day. We have a nice view out the back of the mountain range. That’s right, mountain range. We did not know Texas had mountains. We are at 5,200 feet above sea level. The temperatures are nice, in the 70’s and the humidity is much lower. Buster and Pam are fantastic hosts. A great location as a base to see the area. Big Bend, Marfa, Alpine, McDonald Observatory and so much more.

We also drove the 75 mile Scenic Loop through the mountains. Unfortunately, the McDonald Observatory was closed, but we saw a pack of wild Javelinas (pigs).

Medina River Winery

Pam and I stayed here overnight though Harvest Hosts. What a great place. We had a very nice wine tasting with Ken. He really taught us about how the wines are produced and a lot about wine making overall. Highly recommend stopping in or staying the night. We got a tour of the wine production and Ken let us sample a wine right out of the barrel. Sat outside and enjoyed a bottle of wine to end the night.

Long Island Village

Today, we arrived in Port Isabel, TX. We are staying in this very nice development with over 1,000 sites. Lots have Cottages, Mobile Homes and RV’s. We have a very nice site with full hookups on one of the canals.

There is an 18 hole par 3 course in the middle. It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools and multiple hot tubs.

We got a great site right on the canal.
