Coulee City, WA

On Thursday, we drove 88 miles to Sun Lake – Dry Falls State Park in Coulee City, Washington. Wow, what a great state park in a beautiful setting in the bottom of a large Coulee (large flat valley).

The Coulee Dry Falls is a geological wonder of North America. Carved by Ice Age floods more than 13,000 years ago, the former waterfall was once four times the size of Niagara Falls. Today, the 400-foot-high, 3.5-mile-wide cliff overlooks a big sky and a landscape of deep gorges and dark, reflective lakes. The park is a notable site along the National Ice Age Floods Geologic Trail.

We had a group dinner at La Prasa Mexican Restaurant before heading to the Dam light show. Very good food and HUGE Margarita. The group also surprised me with a Mexican birthday cake.

Grand Coulee Dam Laser Light Show. This was a nice event. They open the top gates slightly to let water fall over the dam to create a white screen for the laser show. Very impressive.

We hiked the Umatilla Rock on Friday morning, and then hiked the Caribou Trail & Deep Late Trail on Saturday morning before leaving.

We visited the Dry Falls Visitor Center to learn about how the coulee was formed from Ranger Dave. Very interesting.

Mountain View RV Pak – Baker City Oregon

On Wednesday, we drove 107 miles to Mountain View RV Park in Baker City, Oregon (our 25th State). Another very nice park with full hookups and nice, shaded sites; we had site 101. We arrived early to be the “Parkers” to help the other 11 campers get to their sites; there were no issues.

The park has a nice General Store, very good laundry and shower facilities. A pool and a spa. All very nice. Very quiet on the north end of town.

Wednesday evening, we had dinner at Paizano’s Pizza. We really enjoyed the Lumberjack Pizza and beer. Josh served us and gave us good ideas on what to see in the area. Very helpful. While eating, a guy picked up his family dinner packing heat.

On Thursday, we had lunch at the “Little Pig“. The food was very good. They roast their own coffee so we picked up a bag of beans. The people were super friendly, and we really enjoyed it.

Friday morning, we went to the Sweet Wife Bakery for breakfast. The food was outstanding. We shared a sticky bun as a breakfast appetizer; Pam had the Quiche and Kelly had the breakfast plate. Both were great. Pam loved her Capuchino.

On Friday, after our hike, the group had dinner at the Haines Steakhouse. They have a great salad bar and the steaks were quite good and we thought the prices were reasonable.

Caldwell, Idaho / Ambassador RV Resort

On Sunday, we arrived at the Ambassador RV Resort in Caldwell, Idaho to start the Cascadia Caravan. This is a very nice RV Resort with paved roads, stone pads and full services. The pool and hot tub are great as well as all the services like Laundry and showers. We were in Site C-103 close the pool and services.

Old Idaho Penitentiary

On Monday, we visited the Old Idaho Penitentiary (Wiki Page). Built in 1870, the Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of only four territorial prisons open to the public today. During its 101 years of operation, the site saw escapes, scandals and the effects of Boise’s transition from the “wild west” to a mid-20th century capital city. Step inside the four walls of the prison yard and imagine a life of confinement as steel doors close behind you.

A very enjoyable place to tour. In great shape. We had a fun presentation on the history from Sam and then walked around and explored. The weapons display was very interesting.

Basque Sheepherder Museum and Boarding House

On Tuesday, we traveled by charted bus into Bosie to experience Basque Life. Boise has a large Basque population. We visited the Basque Museum and Cultural Center. They have a nice Virtual Tour of the boarding house.

Basque Welcome Dinner with Traditional Dancers

We then had a great dinner of Pintxos (like Tapas) and wine at the Basque Market. The food was great along with the special white wine from the region. In the middle, our leaders arranged for a special Basque dance performance outside on the sidewalk.
