Caldwell, Idaho / Ambassador RV Resort

On Sunday, we arrived at the Ambassador RV Resort in Caldwell, Idaho to start the Cascadia Caravan. This is a very nice RV Resort with paved roads, stone pads and full services. The pool and hot tub are great as well as all the services like Laundry and showers. We were in Site C-103 close the pool and services.

Old Idaho Penitentiary

On Monday, we visited the Old Idaho Penitentiary (Wiki Page). Built in 1870, the Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of only four territorial prisons open to the public today. During its 101 years of operation, the site saw escapes, scandals and the effects of Boise’s transition from the “wild west” to a mid-20th century capital city. Step inside the four walls of the prison yard and imagine a life of confinement as steel doors close behind you.

A very enjoyable place to tour. In great shape. We had a fun presentation on the history from Sam and then walked around and explored. The weapons display was very interesting.

Basque Sheepherder Museum and Boarding House

On Tuesday, we traveled by charted bus into Bosie to experience Basque Life. Boise has a large Basque population. We visited the Basque Museum and Cultural Center. They have a nice Virtual Tour of the boarding house.

Basque Welcome Dinner with Traditional Dancers

We then had a great dinner of Pintxos (like Tapas) and wine at the Basque Market. The food was great along with the special white wine from the region. In the middle, our leaders arranged for a special Basque dance performance outside on the sidewalk.

Idaho (24th) State & Winery

Today, we arrived at our last stop before the Carvan starts tomorrow. We are at Y Knot Winery in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. This is our 24th state visited in the Airstream.

We originally booked as a Harvest Host stay, but it is almost 100 degrees, and we wanted electricity for the air conditioner. For $27/night you can get a dry spot with 30amp service. They also have full hookup sites in their RV Campground. They even have a 9-hole golf course as well as a restaurant and Tavern.

Headed West

On Sunday, we started the trek west. We have 7 days to get to Idaho to start our next caravan. We Bonzied it to Wyoming; we wanted to get to or past the Rockies so we were close to Idaho.

Sunday, we drove 6-1/2 hours / 386 miles to Seward, NE. We stayed a simple city campground, called the Blue Valley Camping Area. It was only $10 with 30amp electricity. They have a water fill station and a dump station. They have 16 first come / first serve sites that were level and easy to back into.

Monday, we drove 7 hours / 459 hours to Laramie, Wyoming. We stayed at a National Forest Service campground called Vedauwoo. This was also $10/night but was completely dry camping, no electricity, water or dump station. What a beautiful campground. The rock formations were amazing. The roads are a bit tight for a long trailer, we navigated it with no problem. We highly recommend this campground. It is also first come / first served.

While there, we visited the Abraham Lincon Memorial Monument. The Lincoln Monument is a bust of Abraham Lincoln by Robert Russin, 12+1⁄2 feet (3.8 m) high and resting on a 30-foot-tall (9.1 m) granite pedestal, at the Summit Rest Area on Interstate 80 east of Laramie, Wyoming. Russin originally erected the sculpture in 1959 nearby on Sherman Hill, overlooking the old U.S. Highway 30 (Lincoln Highway). In 1969, after Interstate 80 was built, state officials moved the monument to become a centerpiece at the Summit Rest Area and Visitor Center between the cities of Cheyenne and Laramie.

We also stopped to see the Ames Monument which was only a couple of miles from the campsite. The Monument is a large pyramid in Albany County, Wyoming, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and dedicated to brothers Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, Jr., Union Pacific Railroad financiers. It marked the highest point on the First Transcontinental Railroad, at 8,247 feet (2,514 m).

Wednesday, we drove 5-1/2 hours / 363 miles to Coalville, Utah. We stayed at Dry Hollow Campground – Echo State Park. This state park is $35/night and has 50amp electric and water. There is no dump station. The park is very new and has fantastic and large sites. Our site #6 is backed up the reservoir. Highly recommend this campground. We simply relaxed and rested up.

July: Hudson / New Richmond

Pam and I arrived back in Hudson / New Richmond on July 4th. We are staying with Pam’s mom, and the Airstream is at Barry and Sue Boardman’s place.

Barry and I built an RV site on his land with a nice view overlooking the fields. Barry did a great job pulling electrical power and water to the site. We now have a home for our trailer whenever we return to the area.

We will be “Home” for the month of July, visiting friends and family, golfing and preparing our new trailer for our full-time adventures. Next up: Cascadia Tour starting on August 14th in Idaho.

Heading to Wisconsin

After spending a few days setting up our new Airstream, it was time to head north to spend the month of July in Hudson / New Richmond. We plan to arrive on Monday the 4th. We will be keeping the Airstream at Barry and Sue’s house. We built an RV spot for it before we left, and Barry has added water and electricity – sweet setup.

Before leaving Illinois, Carolyn, Jeff, Nicole and Evan stopped by to see the new digs. They were our first visitors.

We left on Friday and headed to Dubuque to see Christine and Andy. We stayed at Miller Riverview Park right on the Mississippi River. Pam snagged a site right on the river! We had dinner at Pete’s Thai Kitchen. Very good Thai. If you go there, you need to try the Thai Chili Margarita. Wow.

Saturday, we head to Wisconsin. We stopped in Monroe to see Bob and show him the new Airstream and take him out to Baumgartner’s for lunch. Bob had the Limberger sandwich – not too stinky.

We are staying at Tom’s campground in Dodgeville. This is an old homestead where the owners added a campground where others could come to enjoy rural Wisconsin. We have a great site on a hill overlooking the fields. Great views and sunsets.

Saturday night, Tom, Doug, Greg and Rita stopped by for a visit.
