Anacortes – Orcas Island – Kayaking

Tuesday was a free day on the caravan. Ed &Cheri’s invited us along with Mike & Gina to alley surf at their home in Anacortes. So, we left the caravan 2 days early on Monday night.

On Tuesday, Ed setup an Ocean Kayaking tour. First, we took a ferry to the island of Orcas. Cory from Shearwater Kayak Tours gave us a great 5-mile, 3-hour tour of the islands and bays. Cory not only gave us a tour, but taught us lots about how to kayak better and all about the area and the life around us. Very nice tour.

After the tour, we ate lunch on the pier the Market and Dock Store.

Before leaving the island, Ed and Cheri took us to the top of Mount Constitution and on short Cascade Falls Trail hike. A full and adventurous day!

Chihuly & Space Needle

On Monday, the group continued to tour Seattle. We first stopped at the Museum of History and Industry. This was a nice museum that shows the history of Seattle and highlights businesses and industry that started in Seattle.

We went to the Ivar’s Salmon House for lunch. Pam said the salmon was very good; Kelly had chicken.

Next, we visited Chihuly Garden & Glass. Wow!! What unique glass sculptures and objects. Fascinating. A must see if you are in Seattle.

We finished our tour with a visit to the Space Needle which is right next to the Chihuly Gardens. It does give great views of the city. Pam and Kelly shared a (very expensive) drink with Al and Betty at the top in the revolving glass floor bar. Expensive but good.

Seattle (Bothell), Washington

On Friday, we traveled 105 miles to Bothell, Washington just north of Seattle, to Lake Pleasant RV Park. Another full-service RV Resort. Great sites with good privacy between sites.

On Saturday, the group rented 2 12 passenger vans and went to downtown Seattle. Pam and Kelly walked around with Terry and Kirk. Using this video as our guide, we did a foodie tour. First we went to Piroshky Piroshky and Wow. Great food. Our favorite of the day. We then went right next door to Beecher’s Homemade Cheese and had their “World’s Best” Mac & Cheese. Next, we walked to “Dog in the Park” to have a Seattle Dog. Made with cream cheese and carmalized vegies, it was good. Still like a Chicago dog better. Next up – Pike Place Chowder. It was just to hot outside to eat hot chowder, so the group passed. The entire group then went to Dick’s Drive-In for burgers. Although Seattle believes this is the best burger in the country, many felt that In-N-Out and Culver’s are better – Sorry.

We also walked around the market. Saw some fish throwing and lots of small shops.

Leavenworth Ziplines

On Wednesday, the group went ziplining at Leavenworth Ziplines. Our group really enjoyed the 5 different ziplines. They started small (under 100 feet) and ended big (1,200 feet). Very fun and safe. We had a great couple of leaders who made the event very fun.

Leavenworth, Washington

On Tuesday, we drove 85 miles to Icicle River RV Resort in Leavenworth, Washington. Another very nice RV resort with full hookups. Campground was on a river and full of nature. There was a bear that climbed a tree to gather apples. A small mule deer was pushed into the river by coyotes and was stuck in the strong currents. Kelly went out into the river to herd him/her to safety.

On Wednesday, a small group of us hiked the Icicle Gorge Trail up in the mountain in the morning and then the group went zip lining (separate post) in the afternoon.

On Thursday, we visited the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. We really enjoyed this outing. They raise and release 1.2 million spring Chinook salmon each year back into the Columbia River.

Later, Pam and Kelly went downtown Leavenworth; in the 1960’s, with the Cascade Mountains looking like the Alps, the town decided to transform into a Bavarian Village.

We each had a flight of beer at the Icicle Brewing Company. While there, Kelly bought a 64oz / 2 Liter growler – made in Germany – filled with a great amber beer.

For dinner, we went to Ludwig’s Gasthaus. Pam had “Ludwig’s Poutine” Crispy fries and cheese curds topped with Jagersauce (mushroom gravy). She also had the Kase (cheese) Spatzle; house made Spatzle with Swiss cheese and grilled onions. Kelly had the Schweinshax’n (Pork Knuckle). Prepared “Bavarian” style. Served with Red Potatoes, Sauerkraut and Red Cabbage
